Four villages are located within the park (Dragobi, Valbona, Cerem and Rragam) with 852 inhabitants. All of these factors create more favorable conditions for coexistence and socioeconomic development, including Valbona National Park. High and characteristic mountain peaks, lakes, numerous water resources, forests, mountains, flora and fauna provide conditions for eco-tourism.

The valley is known for the rare natural beauties, high mountains, biodiversity and natural monuments.

Valbona Valley National Park

The name Valbona, the etymology of the word in Italian ‘Val-bona’ means ‘the Good-valley’, is a name which describes the valley, its river, and the main village in the valley.

Valbona Valley and Valbona National Park cover the eastern part of the Albanian Alps.

It is one of the most amazing natural resources of Albania, covering 8,000 ha, with 200 km of trails, just 25 km from the city of Bajram Curri.

Going up toward the Valbona Valley, you will meet Shoshani Canyon, proceeding then to Dragobia Village, the entrance gate to Valbona village. A long valley with the only road crossing it, there are a few guesthouses on both sides of the way.
The last village of this valley is Rragami i Shales (the highest one on the banks of the stony bed river, where starts the famous trail Valbona – Thethi ).

Explore the world

Valbona Valley National Park, or Gem of Albania, is inside the Accursed Mountains (Albanian Alps) in Northeastern Albania. It lies between Thethi National Park, the Gashi River, Plava and Gucia in Montenegro, all strictly protected natural areas. The mountain range is spread over the borders of Albania, Kosovo and Montenegro.

The park, which is Albania’s largest protected area, encompasses the forested Valbona River and its surrounding mountains, with their alpine landscapes, glacial springs, various rock formations, and waterfalls. The valley of Valbona is fondly called the ‘Miracle of the Alps‘.

Inside the park, there are many caves and grottos, the most prominent being the cave of Dragobia, where the remains of Bajram Curri, a national hero lie.

Valbona National Park is one of the most visited touristic places during the summer seasons in Albania. It is a wonderful tourism spot of Albania where the accommodation is still left in the hands of the locals and a few small private hotels. Tourists prefer to spend their nights sleeping in “a million star hotel” – in private tents since the sky and the panorama of high peaks that surrounds the national park offers a stunning spectacle of stars and shadows of green and mountains at night.

In Valbona there are many guesthouses where you can accommodate for a cheap price per night that literally are traditional houses or old houses called “kulla”. Except the accommodation room, you will also be served with the hospitality of house owners and a delicious traditional food only they can self-produce. The flux of tourists has increased very much in the five past years and if you visit Valbona Valley, you will see that many tourists choose to sleep in tents or caravans.

Culinary, culture, old traditional houses and mentality, traditional daily costumes and old manners of living are precious assets of this touristic area. Locals in Valbona National Park still live by old traditions and cuisine, a hidden treasury for foreign tourists which don’t have the opportunity to see such living style in their homelands. Most of the tourists that visited the park this year came from Germany, Poland and Czech Republic.

Frequently asked questions

Hello Anna, 1. Yes, it is possible, it is a 9 km mountain road but there is a fee for the taxi (25 euro) 2. You can enjoy our continental breakfast with bio veggies and dairy products (and no meat ofc) p.s : thank you for your reservation 🙂

Hello From Tirana National Airport its about 4:30-5 hour driving. From Kukes Airport or Prishtina Airport is around 3 hours.

Hello Yes we offer vegetarian breakfasts and also people can take breakfast with them . Yes we offer ride to the trail beginning . Thank you

Hello sir Yes it’s possible with the small car the road it’s asphalt and in very good condition also in the winter the road it’s open. Thank you Guesthouse Mehmeti

Hello Yes we offer vegetarian breakfast. We can book a hiking guide and the price it’s not the same depends on the guide. Thank you

Usually it’s not possible because of the heavy snow, so the hiking trails are opened in the beggining of june ,or mid-may.

The nearest airport is in Kukes around 2 hours away by car/taxi. The other airport is TIA (Tirana International Airport) situated in the capital city of Albania and its 5 hours away. Tourists need to rent a car or choose public transport by bus.

From our guesthouse to the start of the hiking trail of Theth is a total of 7 km (1.5h on foot) : 5 km asphalt street and 2 km hiking trail next to the riverbed , most of our clients use automobile transport for the first 5km .

We do not provide this service, but I guess it might be possible if you contact with travel guide agencies in Tirana maybe.

There is a way to Theth for those who don’t want to hike, through the city of Shkodra. From Valbona to Shkodra you can go by car, or by ferry through Koman lake. However, that choice is up to you, because we don’t provide the transport.

Same as in any airport you need to find a means of transport (car rental, taxi to the city center) and then you can take the bus to Bajram Curri, Tropoja – to Valbona (van trip) or take a boat trip from TIRANA – KOMAN (van-agency)-KOMAN LAKE (boat)

Most years snow melts at the end of April, so in the next following months there is no snow in Valbona Valley until the beginning of December. Hiking in Jezerca is possible only after June, whereas Valbona-Theth trek is possible from the end of May.
